The first time I saw the video for Marjoe’s “Crazy” song it was the first time I had heard it. It was the first time I thought “I have to learn to play piano”. And when I watched the video, I was convinced that it was a true story.
Marjoe Gortner was a famous singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist and, unfortunately, a famous man who died tragically in a car accident last year, at the age of 27. According to Wikipedia, Marjoe was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 5, 1956.
As a musician, Gortner was known for his unusual, distinctive and complex voice and guitar playing. Gortner also co-led the band Marjoe’s Crazy with his brother John and was a member of the group’s vocalist band. In a interview with Rolling Stone, Marjoe Gortner said that the accident that befell him was a “one-in-a-million” event.
Marjoe Gortner died of a heart attack at the age of 25. According to this Wikipedia article, he was a major star and major lead singer of the band the Marjoegards when he was killed in the car accident. According to Wikipedia, it was a tragic death at the hands of a mentally disturbed man who was a regular guest at the funeral.
This is exactly what happened to Marjoe’s mother, who was also his girlfriend. She was killed in the same car crash that befell Marjoe Gortner.
Apparently, the man who killed Marjoe was a psychotic and schizophrenic who was on the road with Marjoe for over a year prior to his death. He killed Marjoe because he didn’t think he could live without Marjoe. I can’t help but think he should have just left Marjoe alone and let him play his music.
Marjoe’s mother was a woman of a very sad disposition. The same person who kept him in a state of perpetual terror, she kept him from being married to his girlfriend. She was responsible for his violent outbursts, but she was a person who was the most gentle person I have ever known. She kept a lot of people from hurting each other, and that’s more important than most people realize.
She is the only woman I know of who could keep a violent man from hurting her own children.
