I am a recent graduate from the University of Maryland School of Nursing. As the daughter of a nurse, I knew all the ways patients were treated differently, but I didn’t realize the impact it had on my family. Since leaving school, I have started my own practice and work as a teacher, but I still have that ingrained nursing knowledge that I’ve inherited. This post is about how things have changed since I graduated.
My practice has changed dramatically since I graduated. The biggest change has been my practice becoming more of a profession and less of a hobby. When I was a student, I worked at the hospital. Over the past few years I have stayed home with my kids. I still go to work, but I work with patients who are not only my patients, but my extended family as well. I am truly lucky to be able to work with such a diverse group of people.
It would be a lie to say that the practice of medicine has changed so drastically, but the practice of medicine has changed in so many ways you can’t imagine. Instead of seeing your patients as the enemy, you become the enemy of the enemy. Instead of seeing your patients as individuals, you become the person who thinks of them as patients, not patients.
In the past I’ve seen patients as individuals, but that is no longer the case. I now see patients as being part of a larger group. We are all individuals, but we are all part of a larger group. We each bring unique skills to the table, but we all have the same goal. What we do is similar, but unique from each other. In the best of cases, we are all on the same page where we are working together to treat a patient.
We each have a different goal. We all think the same thing, but each of us bring something to the table that is different from the other. The goal may be to cure a patient, cure a disease, and cure a disease. Or it may be to look good, dress well, or do something that is fun. It may be to give a patient the most effective treatment, or it may be to protect a patient and prevent a patient from getting better.
Sure, I’ve been writing for a while, but I’ve never considered self-writing as a career. But then I started reading about it and realized that I really could use it as a means to help other people. I’m not a writer, but I was able to gain some experience and a lot of information about writing by reading.
